Registration Open for 2023 Crash Investigation Courses
Through a grant from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, the Louisiana Traffic Records Coordinating Committee (TRCC) is funding training opportunities for law enforcement officers in 2024. The classes will be hosted at the Louisiana State Police Training Academy in Baton Rouge, and are taught by instructors from Northwestern University's Center for Public Safety.

Baton Rouge, LA – The number of fatal car crashes involving large trucks continues to rise, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration whose mission is to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities involving large trucks and buses. That is why the FMCSA provides competitive grants on research in how to reduce crashes involving commercial vehicles. LSU Center for Analytics and Research in Transportation Safety, or CARTS, was awarded one of these competitive grants to build an artificial intelligence, or AI, engine to better understand driver behavior that leads to crashes in order to help prevent them.

CARTS awarded a $773,000 grant for crash video analysis
The Center for Analytics and Research in Transportation Safety (CARTS) has been awarded a grant from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in the amount of $773,504 to study the causes of commercial motor vehicle (CMV) crashes to improve safety on Louisiana''s roadways.
Highway Safety Research Group Changes Name
The Highway Safety Research Group (HSRG) will now be known as the Center for Analytics and Research in Transportation Safety (CARTS). The request was approved by the LSU board of supervisors April 26, 2019. The new website is http://carts.lsu.edu and the new email address is carts@lsu.edu.

New Crash Report Manual Posted!
In response to user comments, suggestions and guidance from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Manual for Use of the State of Louisiana Uniform Motor Vehicle Traffic Crash Report has been revised. After an extensive review, edits were made by a revision task force led by the Louisiana Traffic Records Coordinating Committee.

While HSRG staff members actively participate in the Association of Transportation Safety Information Professionals (ATSIP) Traffic Records Forum each year, 2017 marked a particularly special event because HSRG helped host the event in New Orleans. Director Cory Hutchinson, served as the program chair, and notably planned the most-attended Forum to date.
Most Effective Cartography Map
During the GIS-T Symposium, our map, Louisiana Recorded and Predicted Crash Rate by Zip Code, was awarded first place for Most Effective Cartography Map. This map, created by Bethany Campbell, shows statistically significant clusters of zip codes where drivers had a high percentage of crashes involving alcohol.
