CARTS Completes Pedestrian Crash Study

October 22, 2020

BATON ROUGE, LA - The Center for Analytics & Research in Transportation Safety (CARTS) is pleased to announce that it has completed a statewide study of pedestrian-involved crashes that occurred between 2013 and 2017.

The data used in the study included crash report and land use data that CARTS and the University of Louisiana - Lafayette (ULL) collected and reviewed. Goals of the study included gaining an understanding of elements involved in the increasing number of pedestrian crashes and the identification of high-priority segments using a systemic, network-level approach.

Over the last year, staff members manually reviewed and coded crash and roadway data from the five-year period. This data was supplemented with roadway data from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), socioeconomic data from the U.S. Census Bureau, and place location data from the U.S. Geological Survey. The resulting data set provided CARTS analysts with information on over 150,000 unique roadway segments throughout Louisiana.

Using the segment data, a ranking system based on the expected values of pedestrian crashes was created to identify high priority segments in each of the nine DOTD Districts. These segments will be evaluated for the possible implementation of engineering or other countermeasures to reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities and injuries in Louisiana.

The study report and findings will be shared with stakeholders throughout the state starting in November 2020.
