HSRG Director Cory Hutchinson Participates in USDOT Forum

BATON ROUGE - The director of the HSRG, Cory Hutchinson, recently participated in a national forum hosted by the US Department of Transportation. Hutchinson was one of six participants invited to present a lightning talk on using data to improve transportation safety. His presentation, entitled "Analyzing Crash Data to Reduce Fatalities and Serious Injury Crashes," focused on using visualization software, and he specifically demonstrated how staff at the HSRG uses Microsoft Power BI. Traffic safety professionals working in universities, safety groups, and various levels of government from across the country were invited to present their work involving data visualization, integration, and analytics. Through the exchange of ideas, insights, and best practices, attendees had the opportunity to identify potential partnerships and to gather ideas that would further develop work in their state.
About the Highway Safety Research Group
The Highway Safety Research Group (HSRG) is responsible for collecting, maintaining, storing, analyzing, and distributing crash-related data captured from law enforcement and other agencies throughout the state of Louisiana. This data is used to perform many research studies and produce an annual fact book. These publications are used by decision-makers in setting policies, projects, and programs to improve the safety of our state's roadways. HSRG is a division of the Stephenson Department of Entrepreneurship & Information Systems within the E. J. Ourso College of Business at Louisiana State University.
