CARTS Staff Attends Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting

Washington, D.C. – Center for Analytics & Research in Transportation Safety staff members Helmut Schneider, Cory Hutchinson, David Whitchurch, and Karla Houston recently returned from the annual Transportation Research Board meeting.

Fourteen thousand transportation professionals from around the world attended the ninety-ninth annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), which took place from January 12th to 16th. The meeting, themed 'A Century of Progress: Foundation for the Future,' brought together policymakers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives from government, industry, and academia to discuss an array of topics. Over eight hundred sessions hosted presentations on highway safety, transportation design, geotechnology, securities and emergencies, and international activities. CARTS Analytics manager, David Whitchurch, gave a lightning talk in a visualization session.

In Whitchurch's lightning talk, Self-Service Dashboards for SHSP Support, Whitchurch demonstrated a third-generation dashboard generated using the software Tableau. The dashboard was a single example from a set of dashboards that CARTS designs and maintains for Strategic Highway Safety Plan stakeholders in Louisiana. These dashboards allow those stakeholders, many of whom have varying levels of technical ability, to quickly find the information they need to assist them in their mission to reduce fatalities and serious injuries.

In addition to attending the conference, CARTS director Cory Hutchinson and Karla Houston, the Louisiana Traffic Records Coordinating Committee coordinator, participated in a board meeting for the Association for Transportation Safety Information Professionals (ATSIP).

The Center for Analytics & Research in Transportation Safety (CARTS) is responsible for collecting, maintaining, integrating, analyzing and distributing crash-related data captured from law enforcement and other agencies throughout the State of Louisiana. CARTS utilizes this data to develop business intelligence (BI) and GIS tools, perform research studies and produce an annual factbook. These tools and publications are used by decision-makers to identify potential problem areas, create countermeasures, set policies, and establish programs to improve the safety of our roadways in Louisiana.
